Course Description
This course offers a critical introduction to new media and technology, focusing on the relationship between “old” and “new” media and emphasizing the cultural meanings of media in general. We will survey a generous range of readings, theories, and ideas by writers from many different disciplines. During the course, a few writers and scholars will join us as class guests to discuss their work in new media.

Students need to be very familiar with the Internet

At the end of this course, you should be able to:
• Understand the rich history of media criticism
• Evaluate diverse approaches to thinking and writing about new media
• Identify relationships between the cultural reception of “old” media to the current reception (including your own) of “new” media
